Abstract

This article will examine “Sistema decimal entre los antiguos peruanos” by Ricardo Palma. Palma’s essay argues that the Inkas used the decimal system by departing from a philological analysis of Ollantay and the Royal Commentaries of Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. It will consider why this piece is an essay and not a tradición by comparing its constituent elements with the characteristics of the essay as Gómez Martínez theorizes them, including discursivity, lack of a rigid structure, inciting reflection, digression, and vagueness in quoting practices. If Palma does a philological study of Ollantay and the Royal Commentaries, the present article will complete a philological study of Palma’s “Sistema decimal”.

Profesor titular de español en Loyola University Maryland donde es director de estudios latinos y latinoamericanos. Es miembro correspondiente de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua y del Instituto Ricardo Palma en la universidad que lleva su nombre, donde es también profesor honorario. Ha publicado varios libros sobre el siglo XIX: La anarquía inmanentista de Manuel González Prada (1998, 2001), La teoría literaria: romanticismo, krausismo y modernismo ante la ‘globalización’ industrial (2004), La resistencia cultural: la nación en el ensayo de las Américas (2004), y Buscando la nación peruana (2009). Más reciente ha brindado una trilogía enfocada en el siglo XVI: Decolonizing Indigeneity: New Approaches to Latin American Literature (2017), Formation of Latin American Nations: From Late Antiquity to Early Modernity (2018) y Coloniality & the Rise of Liberation Thinking during the Sixteenth Century (2021).
