Abstract

Synadenium grantii latex, commonly known as “the plant of life” or “African milkweed”, contains a variety of bioactive compounds, such as terpenoids and peptides, which make it a promising antimicrobial alternative for the treatment of contaminated water. In the present study, its effect on total coliforms present in irrigation water from Trapiche, Carabayllo, was evaluated at concentrations of 10% and 15%. The quantification of coliforms was carried out using the standard method of fermentation in multiple tubes, obtaining a reduction of 98% and 99% for water samples treated with 10% and 15% latex, respectively. These results agree with previous research that highlights the effectiveness of S. grantii latex in reducing bacteria such as Escherichia coli, which is part of the group of total coliforms. Although total coliforms are no longer a microbiological parameter in the most recent version of the Environmental Quality Standards (ECA) of 2017, this study shows that S. grantii latex generates a significant antimicrobial effect. In this way, it represents a natural, accessible and effective alternative for the treatment of contaminated water, with potential applications in the agricultural and livestock sectors, which can have important benefits for both public health and environmental
