Projects and self-management of learning: implications for training pharmaceutical services in Cuba

Abstract

Among the didactic trends that promote collaborative learning, two important aspects stand out: the ability for self-management of learning and the Project Based Learning methodology. The objective of the study was to determine the theoretical and methodological foundations that support the teaching-learning process of the Short Cycle Higher Education in Pharmaceutical Services, to stimulate self-management of learning in students, by means of Project-Based Learning, in the Faculty of Nursing and Health Technology, University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara, Cuba, during the period 2023-2024. Methods were applied for the collection and processing of information, both at the theoretical and empirical levels. As main results, it was determined that self-management of learning and Project Based Learning converge in aspects that, when correlated, enhance learning in a comprehensive manner, requiring the student to actively manage their processes, the former focuses on self-regulation of learning, while the latter prioritizes the management of real problem solving. The subject Pharmaceutical Services presents interdisciplinary integration, is oriented to practice, development of skills and linkage with the profession, so it requires a particularization of project-based learning and thus stimulate self-management of learning. It is concluded that the determination of the fundamentals that support the teaching-learning process in the Pharmaceutical Services training to stimulate self-management of learning, through Project Based Learning, requires a methodological process according to its particularities.
