In this paper, numerous laboratory and field experiences are commented with regard to characteristics of genetic origin and behavior tendencies of saprolitic soils which have an important presence in the different basins of the Peruvian Amazon plain. There, the natural water content is significantly higher than the optimum moisture content of compaction. On the other hand, valid relationships among clay plasticity, its origin and the parent rock, the maximum dry density and other geotechnical characteristics, which can be identified in each case, were found in order to establish compaction humidity-density relationships for saprolitic soils. That will allow a suitable evaluation of compacted tropical soils for highways embankments and runways which are built in the Peruvian tropical area.
